Understanding Developmentally Appropriate Practice enables a teacher to utilize specific strategies and techniques to meet the individual needs of the children enrolled in their program.  Individual children vary greatly in their development, prior experiences, abilities, preferences and interest.  It is important to plan activities that build on what individual children already know and can do to increase their knowledge.  This is especially true for children with special needs.
